Registered Reports Resources
What are registered reports?
Registered Reports are a type of research reports that involve two peer review stages. The first peer review (stage 1) happens when the study is designed and planned and before the data are analysed. If the report passess the stage 1 peer review, it receives an in principle acceptance (IPA). The study is then guaranteed to be published regardless of the obtained results as long as the authors stick to the original plan and transparently report all additional exploratory analyses. When the results are reported and the discussion is added to the manuscript, peer review takes place again (stage 2).

Where to submit a registered report?
- Directly to a journal. Many journals across various disciplines (psychology, biology, history, medicine, economics, software engineering… and so on) now offer registered reports as one of the submission formats. It is good to check whether your target journal offers this solution by going to their website. Check here for a curated table of journals that offer the registered report format (note that this table does not include all possible journals that offer registered reports).
- Peer Community in Registered Reports (PCI RR). PCI RR handles submissions from all disciplines and manages the review process all the way to the final report. There are a number of journals that agree to publish PCI RR registered reports without further peer review. The entire peer review process is transparent on the PCI RR website. You are welcome to submit your report to any journal and supply information about the peer review process and ask whether your report will be considered.
Registered Reports Guidance for Authors

It’s good to follow the guidance specified by the journal you are planning to submit to.
These two papers also share best tips for preparing a registered report:

Marta Topor, the Open Science Coach, is a recommender (editor) and a member of the Managing Board at PCI RR. She is happy to answer any project-specific questions regarding registered reports preparation or process.
